Every year, the month of June is dedicated to celebrating Pride, a time when communities worldwide come together to honor and support the LGBTQ+ community. In the spirit of inclusivity, Visayan Electric features one of its exceptional employees, Boneville Gae Manatad (Boni), who proudly identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Known as an adventure junkie and a hardworking employee, she currently handles and settles government accounts, making sure their power runs smoothly to provide better service to the Cebuanos. Boni's story is a testament to the company's commitment to embracing diversity and recognizing the unique talents and contributions of its employees.
A Challenging Start
Thirteen years and eight months ago, Boni embarked on her journey as an employee at Visayan Electric. At that time, society held conservative values that made acceptance difficult, but that did not stop her from achieving her goals. While Boni considered her employment at the company as an answered prayer, she also admitted that she faced some difficulties and it took her some time to get to where she is now.
“In my first few years [in Visayan Electric] I experienced friendly bullying but di ra man naku i-mind and I don't hold grudges man pud. Siguro if you respect them, in return respitohon pud ta,” she recalled.
However, Boni chose to rise above the negativity and foster meaningful relationships, eventually turning her colleagues into close friends.
