Visayan Electric reinforces San Fernando’s coast one mangrove at a time

For many years, Visayan Electric, in partnership with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) - One to Tree, has remained true to its commitment to environmental preservation as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

On September 7, with the participation of more than 100 volunteers from Visayan Electric, along with RAFI and the San Isidro Fisherfolks Association, 2,000 mangroves were planted along the coast of Barangay San Isidro, in the municipality of San Fernando, Cebu.

This initiative aims to strengthen Cebu’s coastlines, acting as natural infrastructures to prevent coastal erosion caused by storm surges.

Visayan Electric President and COO Raul Lucero emphasized the importance of mangroves as natural barriers especially during typhoons.

“Each year, we have been experiencing stronger typhoons, that is why it is important that we become proactive in keeping our coastlines safe, which in turn helps lessen the impact of storm surges on the people living in coastal areas,” he said.

Aside from acting as natural barriers, mangroves also play a critical role in preserving the ecosystem, providing homes for endangered species and serving as fish nurseries. This makes planting mangroves not just a proactive measure against storm surges but as a great contribution to preserving wildlife populations.

Since launching the project in 2017, Visayan Electric and RAFI have planted over 15,000 mangroves, reinforcing its dedication to environmental preservation and sustainability. Aside from its annual mangrove planting event, Visayan Electric also conducts annual tree planting activities and coastal clean ups as part of its commitment to the environment.
